FIRE RESPONSE AT PROVIDENCIALES LANDFILL
Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, 3 May 2026 – The Environmental Health Department is currently responding to a fire reported at the Providenciales Landfill at approximately 8:00 p.m. on 1st May, 2026. The Department was notified by TCI Green Ecological, the landfill contractors, who first identified the fire while on site.
TCI Green Ecological immediately initiated response efforts and is actively working alongside the Fire Department, also on site, to bring the situation under control. Coordinated efforts between the Environmental Health Department, TCI Green Ecological, and the Fire Department continued over several days to bring the situation under control.
Commenting on the situation, the Honourable Minister of Health and Human Services, Kyle Knowles, stated:
“The Environmental Health Department is actively working alongside the contractors to contain the fire and is closely monitoring conditions to prevent further spread. Resources have been mobilized to support containment efforts, and the Department will continue to assess the situation as operations progress.”
As of the evening of May 2, 2026, the fire has been extinguished, with ongoing monitoring and mitigation measures in place to prevent any potential flare-ups.
Although conditions have significantly improved, residents in surrounding areas are advised to continue exercising caution, including keeping doors and windows closed where necessary to minimize any potential exposure to residual smoke. Members of the public are also asked to avoid the landfill area while monitoring activities continue and until it is deemed fully safe.
While there are initial indications of possible arson, a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the fire.
The Environmental Health Department will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. The safety and well-being of residents remain the Department’s top priority, and EHD is working closely with relevant agencies to ensure a coordinated and effective response.
