TURK & CAICOS ISLANDS MARINE SPATIAL PLANNING (MSP) TOOLSWEBGIS AND DATA PORTAL ARE NOW ONLINE

The Department of Environment & Coastal Resources (DECR) is happy to announce island wide Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) applications WebGIS (https://webgis.gov.tc) and Data Portal (https://dataportal.gov.tc)  are now live and online.

The Turks and Caicos Government (TCIG) through the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR), in collaboration with the South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute (SAERI), the Joint National Conservation Committee (JNCC) and the Economics for the Environment (eftec), is supporting a Darwin-Plus project to develop Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) Tools for the Turks and Caicos Islands. This stakeholder-driven science-based process aims to develop a strategic plan for managing and protecting the marine environment that addresses the multiple and cumulative uses of the sea and achieves ecological, economic and social objectives.

The project includes the development of an online, island wide data management system that consists of two components, 1) a Data Portal, which is a catalogue of data and 2) a WebGIS application to visualise the data. It has involved the location, collection and collation of existing marine data of the Turks and Caicos Islands, and is an ongoing process.

The Data Portal can be found at https://dataportal.gov.tc and the WebGIS at https://webgis.gov.tc or through the DECR website at https://www.gov.tc/decr/ programmes and projects menu.
