Together let’s celebrate World Maritime Day September 24, 2020

September 24th, 2020, the Turks and Caicos Island together with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the global maritime community celebrate World Maritime Day under the theme "Sustainable Shipping for a Sustainable Planet".

According to the new Director of Maritime Department Ms. Thecla Joseph; ‘This year’s theme is an excellent opportunity to raise awareness on the work of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and its Member States in achieving the targets of the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It will provide opportunities for leaders from various sectors, including shipping, to both reflect on the work done and further plans towards a sustainable future’.

Through its efforts in educating future leaders of the maritime sector and in particular its emphasis on the role of women, the IMO is putting toward a holistic agenda in developing a sustainable and adoptable environment for the sector.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all of us, with impacts on our lives, economies, societies, tourism in particular, the shipping industry and seafarers where numerous job losses have been experienced.  In the midst of this challenge, shipping remains the leading facilitator of the global economy, carrying more than 80% of global trade and has demonstrated to be the most reliable, efficient and cost-effective method of transporting goods. The TCI Government take this opportunity to recognize the shipping industry and applaud seafarers in their ability in delivering our essential goods including medical supplies, materials and basic foods critical in our response and recovery to Covid19.

The Department of Maritime and Shipping plays a major role in ensuring that shipping activities is done in a sustainable manner. Our commitment is to continue ensuring that the regulatory framework and measures are in place for the safety and security of shipping as well as the protection of the marine environment. The Department in fulfilling these responsibilities, requires collaborative efforts and cooperation from all stakeholders  within government, civil society and shipping industry, working together to enhance the overall maritime sector.

Speaking on this international day, Hon. Ralph Higgs, Minister with responsibility for Maritime and Shipping stated; "The government of the TCI gladly joins the rest of the world in this celebration. As a tourism based economy, we are conscious of the value of maritime business in all its forms. The growth and development of our people is closely tied to ensuring this key sector is sustained."

As we celebrate World Maritime Day, the TCI Government recognizes the importance and future role of shipping and the maritime sector in our economic recovery post COVID-19 and future sustainable growth.
