ATTORNEY GENERAL ATTENDS IDB MEETING AIMED AT STRENGTHENING ANTI- MONEY LAUNDERING AND COUNTER- TERRORIST FINANCING EFFECTIVENESS IN OUR REGION

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, 10 February 2026   Attorney General Hon. Rhondalee Braithwaite Knowles OBE KC Attended an event hosted by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) on the margins of the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) Plenary in Mexico City.

The event addresses key priorities across both the preventive and operational dimensions of AML/CFT focusing on Regional experiences on Criminal Extortion and Public-Private Partnerships.

The fifth round FATF Plenary under the two-year Mexican Presidency of Elisa de Anda Madrazo takes place in Mexico City, Mexico on 11-13 February following working group meetings on 9-10 February.

The Attorney General’s attendance is part of the delegation from the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force, the regional affiliated body of the FATF chaired by the Attorney General of Barbados, Hon. Dale Marshall SC. Braithwaite Knowles KC is currently Deputy Chair of the CFATF on behalf of the Turks and Caicos Islands. She is accompanied at the meetings by Ms. Shayone Handfield Gardiner who leads the International Division of the Attorney General’s Chambers.

Commenting on the meeting, Braithwaite Knowles KC said “Understanding regional perspectives and experiences is key to advising the Government on its strategic policies to combat money laundering in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The invitation to attend today’s event as part of a regional group working in the global network to increase effectiveness demonstrates recognition of the important leadership role the Turks and Caicos Islands plays in our regional efforts as well as our commitment to achieving global standards.”

The Turks and Caicos Islands will be assessed by the CFATF in 2028. Collaborative work is ongoing between public and private actors to work together to produce more effective results to combat illicit finance in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
