ALTHEA BEEN APPOINTED AS PERMANENT SECRETARY OF HOME AFFAIRS, PUBLIC UTILITIES AND TRANSPORTATION

 

The Turks & Caicos Islands Government is pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Althea Been as the new Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Public Utilities and Transportation.

 

Mrs. Been holds a Master's Degree in Service Excellence and has extensive training in Leadership and Management. She began her career at Cable & Wireless now FLOW, where she spent 17 years as the first local Market Research Officer and was later promoted to Dispatcher and then Service Delivery Manager.  She continued to advance her career and in 2007 was promoted to Vice President of Retail Sales and Services and remained in this capacity until 2013.

 

Ms. Been joined the Civil Service in August 2013 as the Senior Press and Protocol Officer in the Office of the Premier and in 2015 was promoted to the role of Executive Director within that same office.  In April 2017 she was promoted to the post of Deputy Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Border Control and Employment Services and served in the capacity of Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Immigration, Citizenship, Labour and Employment Services from September 2019 to March 2020.

 

Commenting on her new appointment, Ms. Been stated; “It is with great humility and profound gratitude that I assume the role of Permanent Secretary within the civil service. In so doing I am joining the highest ranks within the service, a group of proven and outstanding professionals that I will now have the privilege of calling my colleagues. As the PS of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Public Utilities and Transportation, I will be assuming oversight for critical areas in the country, including that of the Prison, Energy and Communications.  As it relates to the Prison, I am aware that the Minister, along with the Governor and the Premier, have identified key objectives to promote stability, security and reformation within this system, which I will assist in delivering. 

 

“I have had a fulfilling tenure as one of the Deputy PS of the Ministry of Immigration, Citizenship, Labour and Employment Services and wish to take this opportunity to wish the staff and management every success for the future. As I transition to my new assignment I am eager to work along with my team and wish to assure the Heads of Government, the Minister, and the Management and staff of the Ministry of Home Affairs of my commitment to continue to give of my very best in service to you, the entire government, and the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands.”

 

Commenting on the appointment, Her Excellency, Deputy Governor, Anya Williams said; “As the Head of the Public Service of the Turks and Caicos Islands, I take the opportunity to formally congratulate Mrs. Althea Been on her successful promotion to the role of Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Public Utilities and Transportation.

 

Mrs. Been has demonstrated strong leadership, dedication and commitment during her tenure with the Turks and Caicos Government and has led on a number of key initiatives in her previous roles in the Office of the Premier and Ministry of Border Control and Employment Services, which has ably prepared her for this new role.

 

I wish her much success and look forward to working with her in this new capacity as the Head of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Public Utilities and Transportation.”
