Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, 22 July 2026 — The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) are advising the public regarding the operation of electric scooters (e-scooters) across the islands.
The authorities have observed a notable increase in e-scooters being operated on main roads by children, underage individuals, and riders who do not possess a valid driver’s license. Under the laws of the Turks and Caicos Islands, e-scooters are classified as motor vehicles. Consequently, operating them on public roads requires a valid driver’s license of the correct class.
The RTCIPF and DMV encourage parents and guardians to carefully consider the risks of allowing minors to ride e-scooters on public streets. It is against the law and very dangerous. Because e-scooters lack structural protection, younger riders may lack the traffic awareness and reaction times needed to navigate safely, placing them at risk of serious injury.
Individuals operating e-scooters on public roads without the required driving credentials will face legal consequences, and parents will also be held accountable if they unlawfully permit underaged children to operate these vehicles.
